As the sun begins to set over Pico Island, thousands of Cory’s Shearwaters return from the open Atlantic to their nesting sites along the cliffs.
These migratory seabirds spend the day far offshore and gather at dusk, filling the air with one of the most distinctive and haunting sounds of the Azores. For many visitors, their calls feel almost otherworldly: a powerful reminder of the island’s wild character.
Cory’s Shearwaters (Calonectris borealis) arrive in the Azores during the warmer months to breed, laying a single egg each season. They are a protected species and an important part of the region’s natural heritage.
This evening tour begins approximately 10 minutes before sunset to witness the main arrival spectacle.
A quiet and atmospheric experience shaped entirely by nature and timing.
